Gentiles

Who and what are the gentiles? For Jews, anyone who is not Jewish is a gentile. I am not sure if the “g” in gentiles should be capitalized or not. They are not a people group. The word gentile in Hebrew is goyim which simply means nations. The singular “goy” is what Jews call all individuals who are not Jewish.

Whenever someone does something that is so non typically Jewish (even if they are Jewish) you might hear a Jewish person say, “He/she is such a goy!” So the term goy or gentile especially in previous Jewish generations is used in a slightly demeaning way.  If a gentile such as Bill Gates who is hugely successful it would be because, even though he is a “goy” he has a “yiddishe cup” (a Jewish head/mind).

There was a Rabbi who “converted” to Christianity. He was of course a  public speaker and the first time he addressed a church he began by saying, “Fellow goyim”.  I think you get the idea.

Gentile means people of all nations and God made quite a few of them!

The very purpose of Israel is all about the gentiles!  Here is the proof:

Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Here begins the history of the Jewish people. Abraham the father of the Jews is told that through him all the families of the earth will be blessed.  The purpose of Abraham and his descendants the Jewish people are to bless all the families of the earth, namely the gentiles.

Israel is called to be a nation among the nations to bless all nations. That is the purpose of Israel. That is the purpose of the Jewish people.

The gentiles are so loved by God that He created, called and equipped a nation to bless them.
