The Biblical Meaning of “Hearing”

22 April 2011 4 Comments

Faith comes from hearing the word of God.

This does not mean merely hearing audibly but rather a hearing within; a revelation; an understanding that goes deep into your heart, into your innermost being.

Those who only read or hear biblical truth audibly without experiencing its penetrating life changing power can easily be led astray into unbelief by the very strong, convincing secular humanistic mindset that inundates us daily.

James whose Hebrew name was Yakov, the brother of Yeshua, warns us of this so called wisdom and explains where it comes from.

James 3:15 – this wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.

The wisdom that comes from God is spiritually discerned by those who have received the precious gift of the Holy Spirit.

1Cor. 2:13   These things we also speak, not in words whichman’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.  14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

You see, to believe in an invisible God and have faith that he actually freed a nation of slaves leading them on dry land through the midst of a raging sea and that the death of a man 2000 years ago can change your entire life today is absolutely and unequivocally pure FOOLISHNESS to the modern “educated” and sophisticated person, and I mean FOOLISHNESS!

Isn’t it cool that Yeshua actually rejoiced over this and praised his Abba?

Matt. 11:25   At that time Yeshua answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.

Why can’t we get it? It is not through our own wisdom that we can know God!

1Cor. 1:20   Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?  21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

Think about it. Doesn’t it seem foolish, even absurd that the death of a Jewish Rabbi 2,000 years ago has anything to do with you or me?  And to think that this dead and buried Rabbi rose from the grave and is now alive sounds even more absurd and ridiculously foolish.  God who inspired the scriptures understands this fully. He knows that the real life changing truth concerning salvation must be spiritually discerned. The intellectual humanistic mindset which is so prized in our modern culture utterly fails to see the power of God’s plan. In fact if you see the entire Passover saga of death and resurrection as simply a nice story or myth you are on your way out!

1Cor. 1:18   For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,

And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

When it comes to knowing God and understanding his will we are all on the same “playing field”.  A doctor of philosophy from Harvard has no advantage over a uneducated penniless child living on a garbage dump in rural India.  In fact the poor child may be in a better position to know the truth!  This is mind blowing and one of the things I just love about God.  Guess what?  He is not impressed by us! The only way we can thrill Him is by our faith.

No wonder faith is spoken of as being precious!

1 Peter 1:7 that the genuineness of your faith, being muchmore precious than gold…

and you know how precious gold is these days!

What does this have to do with the Passover Lamb? Absolutely nothing specifically! But I believe the Lord is inspiring me to share these insights with you because in order to understand and see the truth within the bible we must have eyes to see and ears to hear.

1 Cor 1:27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;  28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are,  29that no flesh should glory in His presence.

If you attempt to know God from a human perspective you will fail! If you read the bible as mere literature you will not understand its message.

1Cor. 2:6   However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.  7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory,  8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

1Cor 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.  11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knowsthe things of God except the Spirit of God.  12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

To conclude, the Lord himself told his disciples that those who trusted in themselves, and took pride in their own understanding were blind.  It is amazing how our world view can so blind us so we cannot see the simple truth before our eyes.  No wonder Yeshua warned us that many, not a mere few, will be deceived.

Matt. 13:13Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeingthey do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.14And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:

“Hearing you will hear and shall not understand,

And seeing you will see and not perceive;

15For the hearts of this people have grown dull.

Their ears are hard of hearing,

And their eyes they have closed,

Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,

Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,

So that I should heal them.’

16But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear

Wow! I would say it is an excellent idea to ask God to keep us from blinding pride that will ultimately cause us to completely waste our lives rejecting the truth and believing a lie.

The scriptures and the Messiah himself speaks of and exposes Satan or the devil.  Secular humanistic thinkers would have us believe this evil personality is in reality a superstitious myth.  The Lord told us that Satan is a liar from the beginning and the father of lies.  In other words he is good at lying. Real good! He has had quite a while to hone his craft. How clever of him to inspire the “wise” of this world to deny his very existence!  There is nothing more dangerous than having an enemy you do not even believe exists!  I would say you have no chance of survival if that is the case.

GREAT teaching Jeff. Just about all of my favorite scriptures in one posting. Love it!! I am fond of quoting the verse from 1 COR: “For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” I have also spent years telling my children that Satan “was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” As a studnet of linguistics, this statement has always fascinated me – “when he lies, he speaks his native language”. the Truth is a language as well – the very Word of God. In this instance, we definitely DON’T want to be multi-lingual. We want to speak only one language – TRUTH!!

Hey thanks for the good WORDS Laura! Yes it is soooooo easy to merely read the bible and not get it. One of the things that has always stuck out in my mind is how we are admonished countless times to be CAREFUL to do what the word says. The opposite of careful is careless. My prayer is that we would replace carelessness with carefullness – that is huge for me.
